Bedroom wallpaper: patterns you can sleep with

The bedroom is the room where a wallpaper works the longest hours, mostly unobserved. You see it last at night and first in the morning, and hardly at all in between. That changes what to choose. This guide is about picking a bedroom wallpaper that holds those two moments: the quiet colourways, one deeper blue, and where the pattern should sit.

The wall behind the bed

Start behind the headboard. It is the wall you look at least from the bed, so the pattern never sits between you and sleep, and it is the wall everyone else sees first, so the room reads as finished the moment the door opens. The bed frames it, the bedside tables interrupt it, and a pattern that might feel like a lot on four walls becomes one deliberate gesture on one.

If the pattern is quiet enough, take it all the way around. More on that below.

Colours that keep quiet

Our quietest colourways were mixed for exactly this room.

Whispering Beige is barely there, by intention. From across the room it is a warm white wall with a shadow of a pattern; it earns its keep at close range, where the crocuses appear one by one. Close range is what a bedroom is.

Northern Rose is pink with the sweetness kept in check, dusty rose on a pale pink ground, nearer to old plaster and washed linen than to candy. Romantic the way an old house is romantic.

And Light Blue Ash is blue kept very quiet: dusty, halfway to grey. It changes more than most through the day, pale in the morning, blue-grey by dusk. A bedroom wall that follows the day like that is doing the room's timekeeping for you.

Or one deeper breath of blue

The hero of this guide is Frodas in Slate Blue: imagined flowers on an off-white ground, in blue-grey tones that shift from cool to warm. Because the ground stays light, it carries a whole bedroom, all four walls, without closing the room in. Against dark wood, brass and a velvet headboard it goes classic; against pale oak and linen it stays Nordic. The pattern is doing the decorating, so the rest of the room can be plain.

One wall or four

A rule of thumb that has served us well: the smaller the repeat and the lighter the ground, the better a pattern takes all four walls. Krokus and Fröviva repeat every 26.5 cm, the smallest in the range, and Whispering Beige or Light Blue Ash wrap a room without ever raising their voice. Bolder colourways, or florals with more contrast, are happiest on the wall behind the bed. And Moss Green, nature standing still, sits somewhere in between: quiet enough for four walls in a large room, strong enough to hold one wall in a small one.

Try it where it matters

A sample is a piece of the real wallpaper, roughly A4, cut from the same roll and printed on the same paper. It costs 50 kr, reaches your mailbox in a few days, and the cost comes off your first roll. Tape it to the wall behind the bed. Look at it last thing at night and first thing in the morning. Those are the two moments it will live in.

Rolls are made to order and dispatch within two weeks.
