Serpentin
From wanting to draw something seamless

Serpentin

Climbing branches, drawn so the repeat is hard to find.

The story

A pattern that grew by itself

Serpentin started with one goal: draw something dense but still airy, with no visible seam. Karolina began with the branches, aiming for a dancing kind of movement in the leaves, and says the rest more or less grew on its own from there. She spent a long time making sure the repeat was hard to spot at first glance. The small berries scattered through it aren't decoration exactly; they're there to add a bit of tension, without taking over. She wanted a room with Serpentin in it to feel as calm and alive as being outside.

Serpentin, before the wall

  • Ink sketchbook drawing of the first Serpentin branch, with drawing pens alongside.

The first branch. Serpentin began as a single climbing stem, inked before the leaves multiplied around it.

  • Close-up detail of the engraved roller carrying the Serpentin leaf pattern.

The engraving, close up. Serpentin's climbing leaves, cut into the roller that prints them.

  • Four Serpentin colourways rolled out side by side: blue, sage green, terracotta and ochre.

Four colourways, side by side. Blue, sage, terracotta and ochre, unrolled together to see how they sit next to each other.

  • Ochre, up close. Inside the press as the ochre colourway is worked into the engraving.

  • Terracotta, exiting the press. The warmest of Serpentin's four colourways, freshly printed.
