Krokus
From a tree that doesn't exist

Krokus

Crocuses that don't grow on trees, drawn as if they did.

The story

The flower that announces spring

Crocuses don't grow on trees. Karolina knows this. She drew Krokus anyway after picturing one, something like a magnolia, but built from crocuses instead of magnolia flowers, and that's how the pattern took shape, with Tove Jansson's illustrated flowers somewhere in the back of her mind. She drew it dense and soft, at a smaller scale than her other patterns, so the small explosion of shapes stays playful rather than busy. Look closely and you'll find the pistils reaching out past the petals; she thinks of them as the flower's antennae, feeling their way into the world.

From the studio

Krokus, before the wall

  • Large-scale pencil drawing of the Krokus pattern, with an early sketchbook study alongside.

The full drawing. Krokus scaled up from a small sketchbook study to its full repeat, pencil first.

  • Roller and roll, side by side. The engraved cylinder and the pattern it leaves behind, slowed down to see both at once.

  • Krokus Whispering Beige. The crocus branches printed barely there in the softest cream, coming off the press.
