What a lemon tree does on a trellis
Karolina drew Citrus after time in the botanical garden in Florence, where lemon trees are trained against walls and trellises and grow in ways a potted tree never does, reaching, bending, climbing. She found the fruit both beautiful and a little comic, and chose to draw the movement rather than the botany: leaves caught mid-reach, branches that climb past the edge of the paper. Lemons and their trees carry unexpected colour, too, which is what each colourway pushes a shade further. She wanted a wall of Citrus to feel like growth itself, lush and enveloping but still airy, with something like a breeze moving through the leaves.
